DPT students volunteer at the “The Best Day in Triathlon”
For the second year in a row SPTs from SDSU arose at the crack of dawn to lend a helping hand at the San Diego Triathlon Challenge. This event is put on by the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation, a non-profit organization which supports all persons with physical challenges in their athletic endeavors. (see link to website below)
Students spent the day prior to the triathlon volunteering at a running clinic where recent amputees or those new to running were able to practice safely with new running legs. Jules Stewart, a student who participated in the event claimed “It was so rewarding to see people who started out the morning with a lot of fear and reservation running up and down the corse with a smile on their face at the end of the day. And the kids were so excited! It was hard not to feel inspired by everyone around you”
On the day of the triathlon students helped out by marking triathletes with race numbers, organizing the bike area and cheering on the athletes though out the race. Gail Bachman recounts her favorite memory of that day, “After I was finished with my shift in the bike corral I went to watch the swimmers who were just coming out of the water. There is a large set of stairs that the athletes have to come up to get from the beach to the transition zone. Those who can’t get up on their own are carried by volunteers, the team work that went into that transition zone brought tears to my eyes and the athletes themselves were beyond inspiring. Can’t wait to help out again next year!”
