Favorite volunteer experience: For 10+ years, I’ve always enjoyed teaching Filipino performing arts in the Tinikling Dance Club of Franklin High School and the Sinag-tala Filipino Theater and Performing Arts Association. One of my favorite fundraising events is Tinikling Dance Club’s annual “Make a Change” showcase where we donate all of the proceeds to various charities. In previous years, we’ve raised money for Sacramento Loaves and Fishes to help the homeless, Flint, Michigan to help with the water crisis, and My Sister’s House to help provide aid for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

Hobbies: Working out, dancing, playing the piano, and playing with my guinea pigs!

Favorite sport: Dancing

Favorite food: Sushi!

Favorite volunteer experience: Aztec Dance Marathon – an overnight fundraiser for Rady Children’s Hospital at SDSU. It is incredible to see students from all over campus come together and raise funds and awareness for such a fun and meaningful cause! I’ve also loved being a coach for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that instills confidence and a love for running in girls.

Hobbies: I love hiking, exploring new places, running, watching basketball, eating brownies, drinking coffee, playing sports, and spending time with friends and family doing all of the above!

Favorite sport: Basketball! #goAztecs #goLakers

Favorite food: It’s a tie between fudge, brownies, and ice cream… no I don’t have a sweet tooth…

Favorite volunteer experience: Outdoor Outreach. With this organization, I am able to assist in extracurricular opportunities for underprivileged teens and young adults. This organization provides trips that utilize outdoor hobbies to help these students grow and reach their highest potential by encouraging them to support each other to be safe, positive, and dependable in a group – all while trying new activities. It’s so much fun because I get to share something I love doing with a younger generation who is building up their character off these activities.

Hobbies: Hiking, rock climbing, camping, being at the beach, running, painting, and crocheting. It’s great day if I get to spend time outdoors then unwind at home with a nap and any other relaxing activities.

Favorite sport: Climbing!

Favorite food: I love chicken wings. They’re so much fun and also shareable, and my favorite dessert is ice cream… all types!

Favorite volunteer experience: As part of the Kinesiology department during my undergrad career, I was given the opportunity to start a branch of the 3 Wins Fitness program which began at Cal State Northridge and was recognized by Michelle Obama. This program provides students an opportunity to invest in their community to improve the health of participants by implementing CDC’s required minutes of exercise per week. As the program director, my team and I gathered students to lead and empowered them to make a difference in the community by building relationships with our participants through this exercise program to promote lifelong physical activity. Many participants came out for the exercise program 3 times a week at a local park regardless of their fitness level and continued to bring their family and friends as well. 3 Wins Fitness mission is “to empower individuals to improve their quality of life by building healthier bodies, minds and communities.” This experience was rewarding because I could see the difference we were making in the lives of others.

Hobbies: Baking, playing guitar, listening/singing music, watching Broadway shows, playing sports

Founder of the CA Outreach Challenge

Gail Bachman, PT, DPT – San Diego State University, Class of 2015

“I started this volunteer competition as a way to recognize the amazing work SPT/SPTAs were doing throughout California. I also wanted to find a fun way to encourage students who were new to volunteering to get involved in their community. I was amazed with the response in our first year and was truly touched with all the student’s stories from their time volunteering. I am very proud to be in profession with such caring and amazing individuals, high fives all around!”
