Favorite volunteer experience: In undergrad, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a clinic specializing in helping people with neurologic diagnoses. In addition to treatment, patients were offered group wellness classes, such as boxing and yoga. Most of the time, I assisted with the boxing class by being a target and creating combinations alongside the physical therapist. Although the balance and coordination aspects were quite challenging for the patients, the classes would always be filled with laughter, encouragement, and determination. Through the explosive movements, patients felt empowered and strong! I absolutely loved being a part of a community that had positive impacts on people's mental and physical health.
Hobbies: working out, cooking for friends and family, dancing, playing volleyball, and hiking (especially with water involved)
Favorite sport: Volleyball
Favorite food: mac and cheese

Favorite volunteer experience: Feeding the homeless at St. Vincent de Paul Village. I used to go every year with my parents around Thanksgiving or Christmas time. I think this was the experience that showed me how much I really love helping those less fortunate. I helped the staff prepare and serve dinner to dozens of people without a home during the holidays, and afterwards I helped clean the kitchen and start prep work for the following day. It may seem like serving a meal is so minuscule, but to the people being served, it’s everything. And being able to see the gratitude on their faces and provide a comfort to them during such a difficult time is the most rewarding experience.
Hobbies: Volleyball, going to concerts, binge watching tv shows, traveling, eating, and napping
Favorite sport: Volleyball
Favorite food: Anything and everything, I love to eat!

Gail Bachman, PT, DPT – San Diego State University, Class of 2015
“I started this volunteer competition as a way to recognize the amazing work SPT/SPTAs were doing throughout California. I also wanted to find a fun way to encourage students who were new to volunteering to get involved in their community. I was amazed with the response in our first year and was truly touched with all the student’s stories from their time volunteering. I am very proud to be in profession with such caring and amazing individuals, high fives all around!”
